MINI-Biography:


Margaret Lucas Cavendish was born in 1623 and died in 1673. She lived near Colchester, England. She the youngest of eight children and she had many talents that later contributed to her success. She learned how to sew, sing, dance, and play the lute.She later became a author who wrote sixteen books. She wrote everyday and the more she wrote the stronger and more ambitious she became to excel in literature. Margaret met William(who was the first duke of Newcastle) in France and fell in love. They married in 1645 and he helped her carry out her literacy works. Back then, women couldn't publish books so she used her husband to get her book sold. They moved from Paris to Antwerp. She then received lessons in science and philosophy from her husband and his brother Sir Charles. She later returned to England and wrote her first book
a collection of poems entitled "Poems and Fancies".
Cavendish has been championed and criticized as a unique and groundbreaking woman writer. She was also known for her desire for science. Margaret Cavendish was a woman of firsts, and especially displayed brilliance and freedom of thought in works of science fiction like The Blazing World. Her enthusiasm for science was reflected in books and poems.

Events that shaped Margaret's life was when she used to write when she was younger and when she married William Cavendish. Writing became her lifelong career and William helped her achieve those goals of becoming a great author. She became a world wide writer and inspired millions.



~ What hurdles did they overcome in order to accomplish what they did?
Back then they didn't allow women to publish books and articles and she went years having to sneak and get her stories heard.She wanted to be known as a wit and a beauty. Many readers appreciated her originality while others criticized her spelling, grammar, and writing style. In later editions of her works Margaret refused to apologize for her spelling or grammar, affirming that it was "against nature for a woman to spell right" and that she was "unable to understand grammar and the little she knew was enough to make her renounce it", which was not right. Then she married William who made it much easier by using his name.
