CONFLICT: The spread of French Calvinism persuaded the French ruler Catherine-de-Medicis, to show more tolerance for the Huguenots, which angered the powerful Roman Catholic Guise family.On March 1562, the private army of Duc Francois de Guise massacred a Huguenot congregation at Vassay, starting the first religious war. Many inconclusive skirmishes followed, and compromises were reached in 1563, 1568, and 1570. After the murder of the Huguenot leader Gaspard II de Coligny in the Massacre of Saint Bartholomew’s Day in 1572, the civil war resumed.

Served as a general during the siege of Mertz in 1552 and again in the Battle of St. Quentin in 1557, Commanded the Huguenots during the French Religious Wars.
